And guess what? These shortages are expected to continue for a while now. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blogbody\">The home care staff have to perform various manual tasks every day, such as scheduling medication refills, taking vitals, conducting wellness checks, etc. Stress on the nursing staff has been piling up, which eventually makes them feel fatigued, burned out, and heading for the exits. A <span style=\"color: #2dabe1;\"><a style=\"color: #2dabe1;\" href=\"https:\/\/seniorhousingnews.com\/2021\/04\/07\/over-50-of-assisted-living-nursing-home-workers-report-burnout-24-say-they-had-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>survey<\/strong><\/a><\/span> conducted on 1,327 workers from hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and home healthcare providers revealed that 62% had felt stress related to COVID-19 (Sudo, 2021). Personal Support Workers (PSWs) have dealt with burnout throughout this pandemic. Many are overwhelmed and exhausted. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 22px; color: #1c1e20; line-height: 1.5;\">What is causing home care staff burnout?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"blogbody\">If we consider the nature of the industry, the volume of patients or clients, and the shortage of resources, these burnouts are caused by unfair treatment, pressurizing workloads, unclear job duties or roles, little or no communication from the manager, and unreasonable time frames. These caregivers have to multitask and make decisions that take a heavy toll on their physical health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blogbody\">Not to forget, overtime or extra shifts are also there to blame on. Moreover, while in the patient&#8217;s home, workers have to conform to their new or controlled environment, which is one of the reasons that lead to burnout. It is said that half of all the caregivers working in the home care domain tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caitlin-morgan.com\/reducing-stress-and-burnout-in-home-health-care-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2dabe1;\">experience burnout<\/span><\/strong><\/a> at some point in time. In simple words, these burnouts occur as caregivers help and take care of their patients, and they simply forget about themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blogbody\">These burnouts are characterized by multiple factors, such as <\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"blogbody\">\n<li>Exertion<\/li>\n<li>A sense of detachment<\/li>\n<li>Frustration or anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Panic attacks<\/li>\n<li>Inability to face demand<\/li>\n<li>Headache and extreme fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Body ache<\/li>\n<li>Change or loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>Sleeplessness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"blogbody\"> It doesn\u2019t stop here, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/12\/burnout-is-about-your-workplace-not-your-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2dabe1;\">a study by the American Psychological Association<\/span><\/strong><\/a> indicates that employees with burnouts &#8220;are 2.6 times as likely to be actively seeking a different job, 63% more likely to take a sick day, and 23% more likely to visit the emergency room\u201d (Moss, 2019).
